The project is located on an upcoming exclusive neighbourhood of Managua, District 5. From the beginning, time and budget were crucial components to develop the design proposal. Taller plural (TP) invited the Salvadorian collective of design D2N2 Lab to participate in the design phase. The project involved the design and construction of a pool, barbecue and garage. Three companies were invited to build each component based on their expertise end reputation.

The ensemble idea was based on creating spaces with unique details and structural systems that complement each other and balance the surroundings. The different circulation flows, the family’s expectations and reinforcing any existing natural ventilation and lighting were key components of the design.

Almost all materials came from local sources and production.

Participatory Design & Construction

This project is located on Ometepe Island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve situated in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. By working with local stakeholders we helped people living on the island to realize their vision of having a dedicated space to train and support forest rangers to protect the Madera Volcano forest by combining the environmental consciousness and conservation of biodiversity with compatible economic and human development.

The renovation of the Ranger Station was initiated to use and showcase local materials for traditional and innovative construction techniques, and to improve the profile and functional programming potential of the building. As a means of improving connectivity and accessibility to the surrounding community, the interior program area expanded onto the existing trail and converted it into a tourist thoroughfare and educational / demonstration patio.

This design was developed and executed using participatory process workshops with Balgue community members.
